Bill Lorenzo was my father-in-law and died on August 6, 2009 at the age of 87. He left 6 children, 25 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was buried at Calverton National cemetery on Long Island.
He never spoke of his war experiences to his children but opened up when some of his grandchildren asked to interview him for school projects. We then learned that he survived the kamikaze hit on the Belleau Wood with burns and spent time in the hospital. He spoke of how near he was to sailors who were not so lucky, and I always thought this was part of his motivation to live such a full life.
